Do you think like a World Champion? - Martial Arts in Kingston Ontario

Today I had a discussion with a friend of mine. It got somewhat heated and I'd like to know what you think. HIS opinion was that if you've competed a couple of times, say in Amateur MMA or local Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments or some random Martial Arts in Kingston event, and done well.. It's time for you to move up. To graduate into higher ranking and higher levels of competition.

Wait!

On the SURFACE his idea is sound. Obviously if you're competing and doing well you should move up if anything, just to give yourself greater challenges. But MY OPINION is... How BIG of a pond are you looking at? If you're thinking locally, like Martial Arts in Kingston Ontario. Well that might be an easy task. The Martial Arts community in Kingston is pretty small. It's a small pond probably easy to dominate. But what if you wanted to be the BEST IN THE WORLD? Suddenly your little victory with the Martial Arts in Kingston Ontario community is kind of meaningless. It's a small step, yes, but really you need to keep competing at that level in other towns and smaller tournaments until you're consistently the best. THEN you move up to a bigger tournament or circuit. If you're still doing well, THEN and only THEN do you try some of the BEST and BIGGEST competition circuits and tournaments.

Running a Martial Arts Club in Kingston, sometimes I feel like a lot of the community or even my own students don't have this BIGGER PICTURE perspective. People talk about this guy is sandbagging, that guy blah, blah, blah.... Look. If the person is in the same division for the same tournament and taking gold or silver yet AGAIN... Well thats sandbagging.. But if this person has NOT taken a 1st or 2nd place medal yet and is in the same space again one year later.. If they're not the best then how can they be sandbagging? I mean, if you think about it, the BEST, the GOLD MEDAL winner is better then everyone else in that division.. So why aren't THEY in the next division above them? (If they've never won gold at that tournament in that division yet, then it's because this was their test and they're doing the right thing.. See my above comments).
