Ugly Face of Mixed Martial Arts

Warning! Mixed Martial Arts Are In DANGER!

The year is 2011 and MMA or Mixed Martial Arts are now legal here in Ontario. This is both good and bad. For the most part, all of us fans will finally be able to see an unappreciated, legitimate sport finally a) form an official, government approved, level of organization and b) gain the acknowledgement and respect it deserves.

Until now, if you planned to have any type of career in Mixed Martial Arts the future looked grim if you also planned to live here in Canada or the United States (or here in Kingston, Ontario).

Not so anymore.

The Ugly Face Of Mixed Martial Arts

Now being a tough guy is a career people and young males can aspire to. Or at least have an excuse for. If the statistics weren't so ugly, I'd be cheering about this with the rest of the youth. 99% of all violent crimes are caused by men.

As a Martial Arts School owner, almost daily I see guys walk into my gym thinking they'll be a big name on TV in 6 months to a year. This sort of thinking is, in my opinion, not only disrespectful to the skilled trade mixed martial arts or mma is. You think you can get to the top of this industry in 6 MONTHS? The reality is, most of the people, names and faces we see in mixed martial arts are from people who have been training for anywhere from 6-15 years!

My point? Unless you understand the skill level and true self mastery it takes to succeed in this, you risk being a punk. Think you're tough and to prove it go out looking for fights? Punk.

I'll be upfront and honest. I've been in fights. Lots of them. They suck. More disappointing then anything else. Why? Because in my day to day life I fight for 2 hours a class, 2-5 times a week. My last street fight lasted a whole 30 seconds. Maybe 1 minute. I'm not a punk. I don't get into fistfights anymore. Who wants to wake up in the hospital or accidentally kill someone or put them in a coma like the fool last year here in Kingston Ontario who decided to pull guard and guillotine some guy in line at Subway around 2am after watching a UFC fight. He basically slammed this poor guys head into the ground and put him in a coma.. Thanks asshole. You're risking everything I've put my life into.. Why don't you fight a willing participant like a real man. Jerk.

And then there are the Josh Cheeseburgers in the world. You Tapout t-shirt wearing wannabes. Put a beer in your belly and you can take on the world. Again, thanks for being an asshole. Because of guys like you, mixed martial arts weren't legalized in Ontario until 2011.

Of course, everyone has to start somewhere and in the beginning we are all starting from Zero. As someone with an invested interest and career in mixed martial arts and brazilian jiu jitsu, I have a suggestion for you:

Leave Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu To Professionals And REAL MEN!

You want to train? Keep it in the club, find an experienced instructor and acknowledge its a sport, not an excuse to walk around Friday night being an mma tough guy. I will personally stomp ANY of my students I catch pulling this garbage.
