Point In Case

Lastnight was a perfect example of what happens on too regular a basis for me to be comfortable with. Out of respect for the art, because I love my art and I take my business VERY SERIOUSLY.

Check this out.

Lastnight I had 2 new students or potential students come checkout Martial Arts aXis to look into our mixed martial arts (mma) and brazilian jiu jitsu programs. My guys took them through our usual process, did their best to help them feel comfortable, assess their level and become familiar with our club and how things are done here.
Then it just so happened our intermediate bjj class was wrapping up and I personally had some time, so I wanted to introduce myself and learn a little about who these people were.

Both of these guys were good people. Right away I could see in them all the key ingredients necessary to succeed. I brought them over to the mat since everyone was packing up and leaving and we had a really good chat together about their experiences with mixed martial arts (mma) and brazilian jiu jitsu.

Why It's Important to Find a Good Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Instructor For Your Training In Kingston Ontario

Often times I'll roll with new people, just play around and see where they're at, how they move,
how they approach the art, what techniques they go for. Feel them out. Every good mixed martial arts (mma) or bjj coach does the same thing.
The first guy, let's call him George. George came to us from another club. Said he wanted to roll with new people, he'd been training for 1.5 years and needed something to push him. We begin to roll, I'm letting him do whatever (what have I got to prove?).. First thing he does is slam on a straight ankle lock, drop to the ground, cross his legs over (BIG no no) and starts trying to reef on my leg, not even having the leg lock on right.

I calmly grab his collar, hold him close, pry his legs out of the way and take top mount. Already I'm thinking, how can this guy be 1.5 years experienced in mixed martial arts OR bjj and be fighting this intensely, yet making basic mistakes like that? I'm also thinking, for so much time training, why are his movements so choppy?

So now I'm in full mount on this guy. Again, It won't really do much as far as helping people and spreading mixed martial arts by using people as my personal fight dummies and just crush them (in the beginning). If he had done ANYTHING to escape mount.. ANYTHING, I would have given it to him. ANYTHING!!!!
1.5 years and this guy had nothing. No answers for being mounted. He kept trying to submit me and pushing on my chest, basically the worst things you could do.. Didn't care at all about what my legs were doing.. Totally and completely wrong.

This man's instructor has failed him!

He is very visibly a great student. TONS of potential for an mixed martial arts or brazilian jiu jitsu career. TONS! The way he carries himself, trusted what he has been shown, it's all there.. Except he hadn't been shown one of the most basic fundamentals of ANY Martial Art - HOW TO GET BACK TO ZERO! How to get back to a place where you are safe. It's not about beating people up, it's about staying safe and protecting yourself.

The funny thing is, in our intro class that night, one of my top instructors literally just taught both those things to our newbies. We have a systematic, proven and TESTED progression chart which is not only well thought out, but is designed for optimal performance a.s.a.p!

Nights like lastnight make me less surprised when I get testimonials like this:

See, both Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be broken down into systems and sub-systems. Also, be clear, mixed martial arts (also known as MMA) is more of a sport then a self-defense system.
The rules make some very useful techniques illegal and do not allow you to grab clothing. Often times, the fighters aren't even clothed, but still. 98% of people training are hoping their mixed martial arts lessons will teach them proper self defense. More often then not, it's just not the case. Try to kick me in the head once I've taken you down and mounted on top of you.

Not happening.

So any valid self defense class MUST be heavily influenced my brazilian jiu jitsu (if it isn't entirely a bjj class).

*** ALSO, anyone who has actually looked at the rules for Mixed Martial Arts in Ontario know, they very, very much favour the grappler versus the striker.***

George #2

This post is growing longer then I expected.. Let's just say the story was quite similar with George #2. Both of these guys shared similar qualities. Both were experienced guys and I put both of them into fundamental situations and they didn't know what to do.

Guys, please. Do yourselves a favour. Come checkout our club and see why our systems make for a safe and fun environment for people to learn the key fundamentals needed to really improve their game fast. It's always an honour for me when they do.

I'm not even trying to sell you anything. I'm just so sick of people showing up who don't have a clue.
